The residents of Mulund (East) were in for a surprise spectacle on the 16th of August 2015 as they witnessed the first ever Rugby tournament in the suburb on the vast surface of the Sambhaji Grounds which is normally vacant during the rains. The arena was full of players and spectators who put up an extravagant show of skill and spirit through the Independence Cup Touch Rugby Championship 2015. The third edition was as exciting as its previous two versions but innovative in terms of the venue and its viewers.
The tournament was organised by Mumbai Strikers under the aegis of RAM (Rugby Association of Maharashtra) promoting the Get into Rugby Initiative, started by World Rugby (Highest governing Rugby body in the world). The event was conceptualised and managed by Sports Works India.
It was the perfect combination of weather and venue for an exciting day of Touch Rugby. With all the teams geared up for some good touch rugby action, the locals were all set to see Rugby in its non contact form for the first time in their own backyard. After a string of entertaining and close matches, Magicians grabbed the top spot in the Mixed category while Ace Foundation stood runners-up. In the Women’s category, the spirited girls from Mumbai Strikers struck gold and following them in the Runners-up spot were the girls from St Mary’s Convent, Mulund who called themselves Try Babies. Magicians and Ace Foundation made their mark in the Men’s category as well by taking the winners and runners-up spot respectively. Magicians and Ace Foundation have been regular participants and have been at the podium often in this tournament.
The two time elected Municipal Councillor, Mr. Nandkumar Vaity graced the occasion with his presence as the Chief Guest of the tournament. While he encouraged the Winners and other players with his words of wisdom, he also gave away the awards to the deserving teams.
Mumbai Strikers SC is thankful to Mr. Vaity for his continuous support towards the logistical and legal front of the event and hope that this association goes a long way to promote the sport of Rugby.
